Premature Ovarian Failure Pregnancy

Premature Ovarian Failure Pregnancy

Premature ovarian failure pregnancy is possible. Defined as the cessation of menstrual periods or the loss of ovarian function before the age of 40, it's not the same as menopause. Which is a naturally occurring phenomenon that happens over time.

Studies have shown that autoimmune issues are present in about 20-50% of women with premature ovarian failure. Thyroid being the most common. (You can check out my previous posts on thyroid infertility natural treatments and a thyroid and fertility visualisation if this is relevant in your situation). Screening for autoimmune issues - especially when chromosomes appear normal in premature ovarian failure - is recommended.

"..Women can sometimes ovulate (and even get pregnant) after the diagnosis is made. Therefore, some doctors prefer the term "primary ovarian insufficiency", or POI - as opposed to "failure" which implies a totally menopausal situation." Dr. Richard Sherbahn, MD, Advanced Fertility Center of Chicago.

I celebrate the wisdom of these doctors opting not to use the word 'failure' in this diagnosis. Words matter in terms of how we process our situation. And they influence our expectations and openness to what the future can hold for us.

So if 'insufficiency' feels better than 'failure' - and it does in my book - choose that instead! (I am using 'premature ovarian failure' here just to ensure that those in my tribe seeking support on this will locate the post. As that term is still most often used).

Premature Ovarian Failure Pregnancy -
Case Study

So this was inspired by an article published by Check and colleagues (2004) in the American Journal of Clinical and Experimental Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

I kept on returning to this article and wondering, "why am I being drawn to this?". And how can it support your fertility?". And then I could see the feminine wisdom peeking out! So I will summarise briefly below their findings first...

The abstract shares a case study about an attempt to induce ovulation in a woman with premature ovarian failure and very high serum follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH). Their conclusion was the following:

"Despite small ovaries,  amenorrhea (the abnormal absence of menstruation), failure to have withdrawal menses following progesterone, absence of antral follicles on the initial ultrasound, and consistently extremely high serum FSH, ovulation and pregnancy is possible by merely lowering the serum FSH."

Premature Ovarian Failure Pregnancy -
By Lowering Serum FSH

With this woman, by lowering the serum FSH over 10 cycles, they were able to achieve with her follicle maturation and ovulation.

And on the ninth treatment pregnancy occurred. Which resulted in the birth of a live, healthy baby.

So what does that have to do with you? And how can it support your fertility? Especially if you are concerned about egg reserves running out and enhancing egg quality. Or feel dogged by a fear around time running out to have a baby for you....

Feminine Wisdom

So here is some of the feminine wisdom within this story that can support you now:

As with the woman referred to above, there may well be a catalogue of parts to your fertility story. All of which are telling you that something is awry. Painting a picture of "This is not working. Things are not going according to plan. My fertility is seriously compromised." And you may be feeling overwhelmed by fertility. Or beginning to accept that it is false hope in fertility for you.

But sometimes, if you hone in and change just one piece of your story, the other components can fall into place. Or they no longer show up as challenges - as things that are preventing your creativity.

Premature Ovarian Failure Pregnancy -
Feminine Reflection

So my feminine reflection questions for you are:

  • What one change in your life would support your fertility most now?
  • Which area of your life, by removing/ altering / lowering or increasing, would help you to open up to healthy pregnancy and birth now?

I'd like for you to take time out to reflect on and answer these honestly. Without editing. Just to see what comes up. Because feminine wisdom and guidance will emerge for you. Even if it is not obvious initially.

Take your time and be open to hearing. Then, I invite you to share with us below what emerges as you engage your feminine wisdom in these fertility questions and allow the gift of premature ovarian failure pregnancy to support you now.
